Cover Crops Impact Crops Yields by Improving Microbiological Activity and Fertility in Sandy Soil

نویسندگان

چکیده

Sandy soil often has low organic matter (SOM) content, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and water storage levels. requires specific management techniques to improve quality. The purpose of this study was evaluate chemical characteristics microbial activity sandy soil, as well the effects different rotation systems on crop yield in these environments. treatments consisted cultivation with cover crops off-season. following were used: fallow, a single grass species (SG), two (G + G), mixture three or more (MIX), legume combination L). Corn sorghum yields highest fallow treatment. Cotton G treatments. Soybean lowest SG use resulted SOM content 0–10 cm layer. Phosphorus (P) biomass (fallow L); potassium CEC levels crops. L dehydrogenase enzyme (DEA) that 50% higher than fallow. When compared MIX increased carbon (MBC) nitrogen (MBN) by 66 90%, respectively. implementation under no-till improved even first year, but benefits chemistry occurred only after third year cultivation.

Tillage, cover crops, and nitrogen fertilization effects on soil nitrogen and cotton and sorghum yields

Sustainable soil and crop management practices that reduce soil erosion and nitrogen (N) leaching, conserve soil organic matter, and optimize otton and sorghum yields still remain a challenge. We examined the influence of three tillage practices (no-till, strip till and chisel till), four cover rops {legume [hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth)], nonlegume [rye (Secaele cereale L.)], vetch/rye bicu...

Differential Soil Acidity Tolerance of Tropical Legume Cover Crops

In tropical regions, soil acidity and low soil fertility are the most important yield-limiting factors for sustainable crop production. Using legume cover crops as mulch is an important strategy not only to protect the soil loss from erosion but also to ameliorate soil fertility. Information is limited regarding tolerances of tropical legume cover crops to acid soils. A greenhouse experiment wa...

Influence of Cover Crops on Populations of Soil Nematodes

Wang, Q., Y. Li, Z. Handoo, and W. Klassen. 2007. Influence of cover crops on populations of soil nematodes. Nematropica 37:79-92. A pot experiment was carried out in south Florida to elucidate suppressive or antagonistic effects of several cover crops grown in rotation on soil nematode populations. The crops were two marigolds, Tagetes patula L. ‘Dwarf Double French Mix’ (MDF), and Tagetes pat...

Root growth and yield of maize as affected by soil compaction and cover crops

The yield of rainfed crops is commonly limited by the availability of soil water during the summer growing season. Channels produced by cover crop roots in fall/winter when soils are relatively moist may facilitate the penetration of compacted soils by subsequent crop roots in summer when soils are relatively dry and hard. Our objective was to determine the effects of fall cover crops on maize ...

Influence of cover crops and soil amendments on okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) production and soil nematodes

A pot experiment to determine the effects of summer cover crops and soil amendments on okra yields and population densities of various soil nematode taxa was conducted in two consecutive growing seasons in a subtropical region. Two cover crops, sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) and sorghum sudangrass (Sorghum bicolorrS. bicolor var. sudanense), were grown and returned to the soil with fallow as a c...
